> New/Interested Volunteers: Please contact Julie Pham at etchseattle@gmail.com to get paperwork, sign up for an orientation, join our email listserv, etc. She is currently accepting applications but the cutoff date for this application cycle is coming up soon so please contact her ASAP!!

>Ropes Training: To sign up for ROPES training, look up and contact New Horizons. People have found that contacting the company will get you a quicker response than emailing them.

>Task Delegation/Leadership Opportunities for Volunteers
We are looking for volunteers interested in helping us with some administrative/leadership roles.
      1) Contact Manvir Kaur (manvirk@icloud.com) if you are interested in helping to clean up our Google Drive (which now has about 7 years of ppt presentations!!) It's a daunting task but we're hoping to create a small committee of people tackle it and make material easier to access for everyone :)
      2) Contact Will Tsang (tsang@uw.edu) if you would be interested in running sessions for our volunteers to help them deal with issues they might encounter in sessions. For example, some topics that Will suggested at the meeting included how to avoid/deal with violence/crisis situations, cultural sensitivity, or simply dealing with homeless people. If you are passionate about any of these topics, or have other suggestions, we would love to hear from you. You can opt to lead a discussion on these topics if you are interested in doing so as well.

A recent study has revealed that federally, food insecurity, and the medical costs associated with it, have exceeded $160 billion. Since 2009, when such costs peaked as a result of the recession, they haven't being coming down as quickly as hoped. The author argues for the federal government to support the problem of food insecurity, rather than carrying the consequential burden of medical costs.

Lisa Hysa is our volunteer of the month for November!! She is always punctual and flexible. A couple weeks ago, we needed a volunteer and she stepped up to come in even though she had volunteered the previous weekend. She reached out to a participant in need and spoke Spanish and explained to them how to use the  King County Clinic as a resource.
Great work Lisa!

In the News: Homeless Encampments Being Organized in Seattle

The City of Seattle is organizing camps for homeless people to offer shelter, temporary housing, and emergency food in an effort to end homelessness. So far, the plan is to open two units, one in Ballard and one in Interbay. Just in the three months that it has taken to plan and construct these homeless camps, an estimated 30 homeless people have died. Hopefully, if the city continues to take strides in improving the standards of living and access for the homeless community, we can starkly decrease the morbidity rate.
